Welcome to my first blog post! I have to admit off the top that this was a very daunting task, rife with personal fear and judgment. This is a task that I am committed to as I try to push through the uncomfort and embrace this as a first. So here it is…

What is Reiki?

This is a question that I am asked often, perhaps this is even a question that you are asking right now. If you are, then this post is for you.

I often struggle to explain “what” Reiki is. I always want to respond with “let me show you what reiki is.” You see for me, Reiki is an experiential thing, it is not something that can easily be quantified and explained.

There are many things that Reiki is and many ways in which I choose to explain it. Here are a few definitions of what Reiki is, if you come across one that resonates and speaks to you, then that is the definition for you, think of this as a choose your own definition.

Reiki is

  • A Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation.

  • A method of clearing and cleaning out blocked chakras and increase the flow of energy within the body.

  • A holistic treatment focused on the body, emotion, mind, and spirit

  • A simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement.

  • A connection to “source” energy to help bring about deep healing, growth, and change.

As you can see, the multitude of ways to define Reiki is profound. The struggle comes in identifying which one to explain to any given person. I often find myself being fearful of how people are going to react to my explanation of Reiki. I never want people to think that what I am offering is “hokey” or some sort of a “sham.”

After much thinking and deliberation, I have realized that this fear of judgment is entirely mine and has no place in the work that I do.
